Walter's Story

I live in a struggling Milwaukee neighborhood. Many of the people in the area do not feel safe to come outside their homes, and don’t really have a good reason to either. Isolation and lack of community is a big issue.


What We Do

SET builds pathways to increased self-sufficiency for 4,000 children, parents and grandparents in central-city Milwaukee by


SET leads people to discover and act on their own capabilities for self-sufficiency, through a blend of science and compassion.


A vibrant, productive Milwaukee where people develop to their full potential.


Problems in Milwaukee are so complex that nothing can be done to improve the quality of life for people living in poverty.


Few children in the U.S. are homeless.


Everyone can achieve the
American Dream.


Thought-leaders John McKnight and Peter Block have given us a model where large-scale transformation can occur when enough small groups are working toward change.


More than 1.5 million of the Nation's children go to sleep without a home each year.


63% of African American children born into the bottom income quartile are not self-sufficient as adults.
